Gear : When should you get your gear serviced?

Preventative maintenance is an important part of your life to avoid paying even more to fix a worse problem that could’ve been dealt with early on. You go to the dentist and doctor for regular check ups; you change the oil, filters and fluids in your car; you have your tires rotated; you replace the filters in your furnace; you even winterize your yard and home every year!

As important as servicing your car is, it is even more critical to keep your scuba equipment operating at peak performance. It’s one thing to break down on the side of the road. It’s another thing to stop functioning properly under water! Even if your equipment has been stored without use for a long period of time, many parts begin to breakdown and need to be replaced such as rubber O-rings, hoses and dynamic pieces.

EQUIPMENT SERVICING INTERVALS

Here are some rules of thumb concerning equipment servicing intervals. (Please keep in mind that specific brands will have manufacturer recommended intervals.)

1. Most Regulators – every year (Atomic every 2 years)

2. BCDs – a least every other year (pay particular attention to the inflation mechanism)

3. Tanks VIP – every year on expiration of VIP or sooner (Read our article: HYDRO vs. VIP)

4. Tanks Hydro – every 5 years on expiration of Hydro stamp

5. O2 Clean equipment and tanks – at least once per year or more often as needed

It goes without saying that if you suspect that your equipment is not functioning at peak performance, bring it in and let us take a look at it. One of the most important safety rules you learn in diving is to prevent a problem from occurring. Owning your own equipment and ensuring proper functioning is your responsibility as a good diver!
